Q&A - January 2004

Paul Rivett - The inside line

Making the most of the lull provided by the off-season, Paul took time out to answer a few questions about his hopes for the 2004 season, as well as his career to date and motorsport in general…

How have you settled in at Team Boulevard Racing?
Very well, you couldn't ask for a nicer bunch of people - very friendly and good fun as well as being very dedicated and good at the job. Their motto is "is your not having fun then what's the point?!", and that couldn't be more true!

What are your hopes for 2004?
Well to win of course, but it's certainly not going to be easy with the series being as competitive as ever.

With 20 rounds in 2004, there are a lot more points available than when you won in 2002. Will this make winning the championship more difficult?
Not necessarily more difficult but certainly different strategies will come into play. It will hopefully make it more of a level playing field and certainly be more exciting for the fans. Double the amount of starts, action and of course the crashes.

How will you approach the first few races in 2004?
It's always good to get an early lead in the championship but then the Clio Cup is probably one of the most unpredictable forms of racing there is.

What are you most looking forward to about 2004?
Well at the moment I can't wait to get back out in the car, it always seems that the winter drags on forever, but it's always a great feeling to cross the line first.

What is the highlight of your career to date?
Most probably winning the Clio Cup but I also had some great times racing in the states; nearly forty cars on a half mile oval track, and you thought the Clio's were close!

What are your aims in motorsport?
I'd really like to make a living from motorsport and love all close racing, maybe the British Touring Cars or Australian Supercars.

What is the most exciting car you have ever driven on the track?
When I was in America I did some work at a race school and got to drive some very high-powered NASCAR style stock cars on a road course. I took the M.D. of a company that was there for the day for a passenger ride. When he got out the car he was as white as a sheep, was shaking and had to sit down for while, his employees found it hilarious.

Which UK circuit do you most enjoy driving? And which do you least enjoy?
I think Thruxton and Brands are probably my favourites, with Thruxton being ultra fast and Brands being my local. As for the worst it's definitely Snetterton. I'm not sure why, there's just something about it.

Paul will be competing in the 2004 Elf Renault Hill House Hammond Clio Cup with Boulevard Team Racing. The series kicks off on 10/11 April at Thruxton, Hampshire.
