18/09/2011 - A disappointing meeting sees Paul loose the championship lead

Rockingham rounds 13 and 14 of the Air Asia Renault Clio Cup

The weekend started badly for Paul when a fire in the engine, caused by a parts failure out of the teams hands, in Paul Rivett @ Rockingham - Photo by Jakob Eberyqualifying only allowed Paul three laps. Which meant he qualified 16th in both races.

In race 1 Paul made a great start and was up to 9th by the second lap. Paul was having one of his best races of the season and managed to battle up to 7th by the checkered flag.

After the race Paul said... " I have never been so happy to finish 7th in my life!! That has got to be my best race of the season so far, to fight through the field like that and nearly be the fastest car on the grid is just great. It was just brilliant, clean Clio racing today and that's what we like to see."

In race 2 Paul made a poor getaway and was dead last by turn 1 but manage to get up to 8th in the run up to the hairpin! Hoping to push on from there, and minimise the points loss in the championship race, Paul set about trying to catch Adam Bonham in 7th place. In trying to get past Bonham Paul was passed by Ant Whorton-Eales but was able to get back up to 8th at the end of the lap as Whorton-Eales had forced his way past Bonham and Paul followed through.

Paul tried to get further up the field but did not want to risk another DNF so finished 8th.

Paul said "After managing to get up to 8th by the hairpin I was looking to push on up the field but after getting numerous taps from Ant Whorton-Eales I decided it was better to let him through than risk a DNF. After that I was able to get back up to 8th but that was as far as it got.

It is still all to play for at Brands Hatch and I will do my upmost to get that third title and I now have nothing to loose so I will be going for it."

In the second race Paul qualified on pole and lead from lights to flag, posting another fastest lap and winning by 2.7seconds from Jack Goff.

"I got a little tap from Jake Packum at the start going into Paddock Hill bend which gave the car a bit of a wiggle but after that it was just about keeping ahead and in the end I was able to pull away.

Its absolutely great to do so well in the Lumison blue square data car run by Stancombe vehicle engineering in the first meeting of the new season and great to be leading the championship and looking forward to building on these results at the next meeting at Donington park."
